On page 108 of For Space, an impassioned book that discloses the theoretical and political challenges of thinking space, a map of part of the South-East of England is inscribed with a very simple if perhaps initially puzzling phrase: The phrase recalls Rene Margritte’s famous inscription below a painting of a pipe: ‘ceci n’est pas une pipe’ (this is not a pipe).
